| Subject: [BlackTresses] My 9 y/o son's hair | ||
| I dont know if you all remember my mentioning several months ago that my son wanted to grow his hair out in order to wear cornrows and twists. Well after much deliberation, I told him yes. He's been growing it since the middle of May. He attends a Primitive Baptist Church Academy that I pay for. Last night I put comb twists in his hair. Well I got a call this morning from the school administrator informing me that he is in violation of school dress code. The dress code states that the boys' hair should be neatly cut and trimmed, not touching the ears, in a manner that is normal for a boy. No styles. Though I'm sure nothing will change, I need to have my say with the school's administration. The pastor of the church is very old fashioned and a power monster. He rules (and thinks he super-rules) Since it's a private school, they're kind of free to set their own rules. My husband and I are having a meeting with the adminstration on Monday morning. I have so much that I want to say, but I want to present my 'case' in a professional (not ghetto) manner. Questions for you all. 1. Is this a battle worth fighting? 2. Do I have a leg to stand on as far as the constitutional rights of my son as it relates to the dress code? 3. Pulling my kids out wouldnt really change anything. Do you see any other options? I'm looking for some insight here. I plan on bringing pictures of African hairstyles with me to the meeting. I will also be at the board meetings this year. I've been participating in the PTA, but I will add the board to my list. What do you all think? | ||
